Summer 2026 Update
As summer begins to wind down,
We hope everyone has had an enjoyable and safe season in, on and around the Stockbridge Bowl. We've weathered some rain and high temperatures but year after year there's no place many of us would rather call home.
The annual meeting of the Stockbridge Bowl Association was held on August 1 at The Mount. The SBA thanks The Mount for their continued assistance and support.
Pat Kennelly presented the 2026 President’s Report that can be found on the New! SBA website here.
Highlights of the presentation are presented below:
Restoration/Dredging Project
The SBA continues to work closely with the Town of Stockbridge and Project Manager Town Administrator, Michael Canales. GZA, a firm that provides geotechnical, environmental, ecological, water, and construction management services is performing the design and permitting for the project.
This past year, Bullard Woods has been cleared as a deposit area for the silt removed from the Bowl. Over the next year, GZA will perform engineering design and permitting that will provide for cost estimates and a timeline for completion of the project. The target date for implementation of the dredging/restoration project is 2028.
We will keep you posted on progress in each future Update Newsletter.
Invasive Vegetation and Weed Removal
The SBA works closely with the Town to obtain permits to implement programs for the removal of invasives and reduction of nuisance weeds in the lake.
The SBA has retained the firm GEI Consultants to perform surveys and obtain permitting to enable Diver Assisted Suction Harvesting (DASH), a mechanical method for removing invasive Eurasian Milfoil from designated areas of the Bowl
In this 5th year of collaboration between the SBA and the Town, the water chestnut eradication program has been highly successful. In 2022, there were 1,350 water chestnut plants removed. This year the total removed was 33!
The Harvester is managed by the Town Highway Department. It is permitted to cut and harvest vegetation over 10 acres in designated areas of the Bowl. It continues to operate on an average of 3 runs each week
Bullard Woods
SBA once again was awarded a Community Preservation Act grant of $5,000 to pull invasive plants
The SBA continues to provide ongoing trail maintenance. The trails are well marked and not too strenuous - it's a great place to wander.
The installation of a new dock was accomplished this year.
If you haven't hiked Bullard Woods or kayaked over to Kwuniikwat Island, they're fun things to do. The SBA owns and manages both and is always open to suggestions to make those experiences better.
Boat Ramp Renovation
Mass Division of Wildlife and Recreation performed a renovation of the boat launch ramp area in May, 2027 and the SBA partnered with the Town of Stockbridge on notifications and future signage.
The SBA continues to support the Town in their diligent operation of the Zebra mussel monitoring station at the boat ramp. Zebra mussel invasion continues to be a threat to ponds in the Berkshires. A clean and healthy lake is everyone's responsibility.
Stockbridge Library Kayak Lending Program
The SBA previously had donated kayak racks for the Town beach
This year the SBA purchased a kayak rack and two additional kayaks dedicated for the Kayak Loan Program - Click Here for More Information
The program has been very well received and it has enabled residents with a library card and without access to a kayak to get out on the lake. The SBA is thrilled to partner with the library to “get this off the ground”.
New Website
The SBA has launched a new website: https://www.thesba.org/
Please take a look; it's a wonderful refresh from what we've had in the past.
There are many features that you will find useful, including current and archived information, resources, a photo gallery, and multiple "get in touch" buttons on most pages to send your feedback and/or submit your favorite photos.
